The District’s student achievement results for the 2010-2011 school year show upward trends in a number of key areas. The Board of Trustees is encouraged by this news and is confident this trend will continue in the coming years.
“The Board is delighted to hear that our students continue to make gains in achievement,” said Dave Colburn, Board Chair. “We take great pride in the fact that an increasing number of elementary and junior high students are doing well in core courses, and that more young people are completing high school. We’re committed to sustaining this success well into the future.”
Edmonton Public Schools continues to see growth in its high school completion rate. From 2005-2006 to 2009-2010, the District saw a 2.9 per cent increase in its five-year high school completion rate, rising to 74.9 per cent from 72.0 per cent.
When comparing district results to the Province, there were continued positive results for students in Grades 6 and 9 for all core subjects, including French language arts. In addition, students in Grades 3, 6, and 9 performed well on the revised math provincial achievement tests, exceeding the province at both the acceptable standard and standard of excellence. Finally, the District was pleased to see that the percentage of students meeting the acceptable standard for the Grade 3 English Language Arts test is above 80 per cent for the first time in five years.
On the diploma exams, in comparison to the Province, district students had strong results in all science subjects and French Language arts, while other subjects, including math, social studies, and English Language Arts demonstrated room for improvement.
“I feel our results speak to the great work we’re doing to meet the diverse needs of our students,” said Tanni Parker, Assistant Superintendent of Student Learning Services. “We not only continue to look at areas where we’re making gains and learn from those successes, but we’re also focusing on developing responsive solutions to address areas in which we face challenges.”
